The UK’s population is ageing rapidly, with figures from the House of Commons suggesting that the proportion of Brits aged 65 or older is set to rise by more than a quarter by 2075, up from 18% in 2024. So while of course it’s wonderful we’re all living for longer, we do need to think about how to age well. Exercise and physical activity form a key part of this.
There are myriad benefits to staying active as you get slightly older, including:
Then there are the mental and emotional rewards of physical activity, such as sharper brain function, enhanced mood and improved sleep. You’ll also find you have more energy for the hobbies and social activities you love.
So it’s worth doing some exercise every day, and minimising how much time you spend sitting down. Aim for at least 150 minutes of weekly moderate-intensity activity (such as brisk walking, cycling or dancing), or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week, says the NHS.
On two or more days of the week, do something that boosts strength, flexibility and balance; this will help stop falls and keep you independent.
You may have regularly walked past your local outdoor gym before, but not thought to use it, either because it never occurred to you to do so, or because you thought outdoor gyms and park exercise equipment were just for kids.
In truth, exercising in park environments is for everybody, and using the outdoor gym equipment for adults means you’ll enjoy all the benefits of working out in the open air too! So next time you wander past park exercise machines, consider jumping on and having a go!
Not only that, but using park fitness equipment is a highly sociable affair, making it a great way to exercise with others and meet new people, so that a park equipment workout becomes pleasurable rather than a chore.
You’ll find that the majority of outdoor gyms incorporate elderly fitness equipment among their pieces, so in this kind of gym, outdoor workout options are very varied for older users.
Here are just some examples:
1. Try an outdoor stationary bike
This is one of the best pieces of exercise equipment for elderly users on the market. This outdoor bike is an excellent piece of exercise equipment for seniors. It’s a great way of cycling without having to worry about traffic etc. on a regular push bike.
You’ll boost your balance, while improving core strength and muscle tone, which can decrease as we age. So you get an excellent cardiovascular workout – or why not use it to warm up before going on to other pieces? Plus, it’s extremely safe for all ages to use and very low impact on joints. As you build strength and stamina, you can up the amount of time you spend pedalling and how hard you work.
2. Air skier
This is another item that works well as a piece of elderly gym equipment, it is also very low-impact when it comes to joints. Again, you can build up your fitness, by increasing the intensity and duration of your workout; with this machine, you set your own pace, gently or vigorously swinging side to side. Our air skier improves flexibility, cardio fitness and core strength. Plus it’s hugely user-friendly and a fun, highly safe way to exercise. Equally, we can supply workout plans.
3. Arm and Pedal Bike
Check out our arm and pedal bike. This is another great piece of gym equipment for elderly users and suits all ages and levels of fitness and ability. It gives you a cardiovascular workout which has a low impact on joints, boosts balance, coordination and flexibility, working the arms, legs and core.
