Share a workout with your dad this Father’s Day

Father’s Day is celebrated in the UK on the third Sunday in June, and this year falls on the 15th June. If you’re bored of giving your dad yet another pair of socks, cufflinks or aftershave, how about spending quality time together instead of or as well a present, and make some memories. It could do your relationship a power of good.

If your dad doesn’t play golf, or the idea of a day at a racing track or skydiving is a bit ambitious, how about looking closer to home? Something you may not have considered is a joint workout at an outdoor gym. After all, there’ll be one near you, outdoor gyms are free at the point of use, plus you’ll enjoy all the benefits of working out under the sky with a full-body workout.

For example, as we’ve discussed previously, how outdoor exercise sessions release anti-stress endorphins, so there’s a definite mood-enhancing effect – we all feel better for breathing in a bit of fresh air. And for younger people in particular, it’s worth understanding the power of physical activity in warding off a number of mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

Plus, exposure to sunlight means you naturally boost your body’s supply of Vitamin D, which helps to build healthy bones.

Equally, outdoor workouts are often even more effective than their indoor equivalents, since heart and muscles work harder in cooler air to maintain body temperature, potentially resulting in greater muscle gain, so you may burn more calories this way.

What’s more, outdoor gyms have a range of equipment which is suitable for all ages, abilities and levels of fitness, including accessible equipment, so everybody can enjoy them and benefit from using them.

For men in particular, who are more likely than women to have a reduced life expectancy due to some medical conditions, there are significant benefits. So, who knows? Your trip to your local outdoor gym together could encourage your dad to make it a regular thing. The resulting mental and physical health benefits for Dad could be the greatest Father’s Day gift of all.
