How To Spend Your Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Funding

The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), is a charge local councils apply to new developmentst in their area to help pay for infrastructure projects needed locally, from transport schemes to community facilities. Previously described as Section 106 funding, these arrangements are also called planning obligations.

One way in which your local authority could spend this money, is in providing outdoor gym equipment for your area.

Who benefits from an outdoor gym and how?

For a start, anyone can use an outdoor gym, enjoy it and feel the benefits of outdoor exercise, regardless of age, gender, fitness level or ability. For older users in particular, this group can be helped to remain active while retaining strength, balance, independence and experiencing less social isolation, meaning they enjoy enhanced overall quality of life.

Outdoor workout facilities provide multitude benefits including:

  • Enhanced mood, better sleep plus more physical and mental energy. Feelings of depression, anxiety and tension all diminish – according to the charity Mind, one in four adults in England experience some kind of mental heath issue every year.
  • Greater absorption of Vitamin D, which is vital to both mood improvement and having healthy bones, muscles and teeth.
  • A reduced chance of Type II diabetes, lower blood pressure and a lower heart rate plus all the usual benefits of physical activity including weight management.
  • Open-air gyms are free at the point of use and, for most people, it’s pretty easy to find one near them. There are no membership fees or lengthy, potentially complicated contracts to sign.
  • While figures vary, it’s widely believed that you can burn up to 10% more calories working out under the sky rather than indoors.
  • For employers in particular, exercise reduces stress and boosts workplace productivity.
  • We’ve also previously written about the key role outdoor gyms can play in bringing people together while also improving public health, serving as cross generational community hubs.
