How Exercise Can Help Protect the Brain from Anxiety

Summary

• Research continues to show a strong link between regular physical activity and better mental health.
• Frequent exercise was associated with reduced chance of anxiety symptoms and a significantly lower risk of anxiety-related disorders.
• Exercise also releases endorphins and brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which can support brain resilience, neuroplasticity and emotional wellbeing.
• The structure, social interaction and sense of achievement linked to exercise may also help protect against anxiety.
• Light or moderate activity, such as walking or gardening, can make a positive difference to mental health.

The Link Between Physical Activity and Mental Health

The links between good mental health and physical activity are well known and documented. And we all tend to feel less stressed and happier after a long walk or a workout. Now the science is showing that if you keep moving, it may not just relieve anxiety – rated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as one of the biggest factors behind disability globally – it could play a key role in helping to avoid it.

The WHO rating is backed up by further research from the UK’s Mental Health Foundation suggesting that 60% of UK adults experienced anxiety that interfered with their daily lives in the previous two weeks. Meanwhile, information from City St George’s, University of London shows starkly how the proportion of those in England with poor mental health has climbed steeply over the last three decades.

Can Regular Exercise Reduce the Risk of Anxiety Symptoms?

A new study seen in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine assessed more than 80,000 adults and revealed that those who were physically active had considerably reduced chances of developing symptoms of anxiety or similar issues over time, with the odds lowering in proportion with increased movement.

Among those who worked out frequently, the chances of developing symptoms of anxiety reduced by some 13%, while the risk of experiencing any anxiety-related disorder dipped by nearly a third (over 30%). For the most common of these conditions, generalised anxiety disorder, the risk was almost 50% less in those who exercised regularly.

Why does movement protect against anxiety?

In truth, the jury is still out on this in many ways. But there could be a number of different factors at play:

  • Working out helps to balance levels of the ‘stress hormone’ cortisol and regulate the way the body responds to stress, leading to more stable mood and enhancing energy.
  • It releases endorphins and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which encourages brain resilience and neuroplasticity.
  • Behavioural elements include the structure of planned exercise sessions, the social side of working out and the feeling of achievement you gain afterwards, all of which can help ward off symptoms of anxiety.

Finally, those working on the study noted that even moderate or light activity such as walking or gardening is enough to make a difference to your mental health.

Why Outdoor Exercise Can Boost Mental Wellbeing

If you incorporate regular movement into your daily routine, you could make your brain resilient to stress and anxiety over time. Here are some tips:

  • Be outside where possible: If you move and get exposure to natural daylight at the same time, you maximise the potential benefits of your workout.
  • No one’s perfect – aim to be consistent instead: Government guidelines stress the importance of undertaking at least 150 minutes of weekly moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise for those aged 19 to 64. But do what you can – even a short, brisk walk can make a difference. What matters is that you do some form of regular exercise.
  • Don’t forget strength training: This is important for building muscle, but also for vital for things like reducing inflammation and regulating blood sugar, which can also impact mood.
