Shelley Primary School’s values are aspiration, respect and togetherness through self-improvement, good sportsmanship, and team spirit. By providing opportunities for children to take part in competitive and non-competitive physical activity, and educating them on how wellbeing is linked to a physically active and healthy lifestyle, the pupils are given skills that set them up for life.
Shelley Primary School recognised the need for an inclusive approach to sports and activities to build and inspire confidence. Adding an outdoor gym to their facilities improved the opportunities for all by providing different ways to be physically active at school.
A large site was identified to provide a wide range of different equipment. The challenge was to provide attractive, engaging equipment that is safe and easy to use for all ages and abilities. The equipment needed to accommodate large numbers of pupils and be hard wearing and long lasting.
The equipment had to deliver a full range of cardio and strength training, whilst improving flexibility and balance – and critically had to be great fun to use!
Fresh Air Fitness proposed a 21-user gym for Shelley Primary School plus the exciting, new Children's Fitness Rig. The whole array of outdoor gym equipment can accommodate a total of 29 users and provides unlimited ways to use and enjoy the equipment.
The installation comprised the following pieces of equipment:

By installing their outdoor gym, the school has been able to offer pupils a year-round outdoor active play option. Children being physically literate at an early age is known to encourage healthy adulthood and as the gym is located outdoors, students are also feeling the benefits of the fresh air and natural daylight every day too! A wonderful boost to physical and mental wellbeing.
