The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is a major government department at the heart of the justice system for the UK. The MoJ understood the necessity of regular fitness for inmates held in prison, for both their physical and mental wellbeing. The MoJ needed a fitness solution that would be extremely durable, installed professionally and, with regular use, would provide genuine benefit for prisoners. The MoJ chose to partner with Fresh Air fitness and now, more than 8 years on, and more than 500 installations later across the whole of the UK, Fresh Air Fitness are proud to remain sole partner.
The very nature of a prison inherently offers its own challenges. Every prison is unique, from the size of yard, the solution required for the demographic, budget and, of course, accessibility. In addition to access into the prisons, tools and materials are all closely scrutinised too. MoJ have strict codes of conduct that our installation teams must abide by, as well as the requirement for high level clearance.
By working in partnership with each site we have successfully managed each project, overcoming all obstacles, installing each outdoor gym safely and professionally. Finding solutions that work for each prison, maximising the space and budget to ensure all inmates can benefit from the outdoor fitness equipment. HMP Garth saw the biggest installation, in 2017, with multiple pieces installed across all yards, including pull up bars, dips stations, sit up benches. The benefits of our equipment within these settings has proven invaluable. Many sites have returned for additional outdoor gym equipment for yards across their site, including Wayland, Belmarsh and Pentland to name but a few, testament to the longevity, product quality and benefits our outdoor gyms provide. Having our own inhouse installation teams have really come into their own here too. Each site requires various documentation prior to accessing the site, something we are able to provide timely and seamlessly.
Our outdoor gym equipment has continually proven itself, in these intense environments, with such regular and demanding use. Standing the test of time, testament to our product quality and longevity. The anti-vandal design, coupled with the high-quality materials, proving they’re fit for purpose time and time again.
