Creating an environment where children feel confident, included and motivated to be active is just as important as the activities themselves. Our recent Fresh Air Fitness Survey asked SEND professionals:
27th July 2026
For children with SEND, the environment can have a huge impact on their willingness to participate in physical activity.
A well-planned space helps children feel secure, understand expectations and enjoy being active without unnecessary barriers.
When creating these environments outdoor equipment needs to be easy to access, ability-appropriate or all-ability, and staff have to have the confidence and resources to adapt sessions for every learner.
Keep it simple.
The most popular response from professionals (33.3%) was ‘simple solutions that are easy to use.’
SEND staff are often managing a wide range of needs within a single session, so overly complex equipment or lengthy instructions can become a barrier. Straightforward activities and intuitive equipment allow teachers to spend more time engaging with children rather than explaining processes.
For pupils, simplicity also reduces anxiety. When activities are easy to understand, children are more likely to participate confidently and enjoy the experience.
The second highest priority (26.7%) was ‘safe, supportive equipment’
Children with SEND often require additional physical support, stability or reassurance during exercise. Equipment that is robust, comfortable and designed with a range of abilities in mind helps children participate safely while giving staff confidence in delivering sessions.
Feeling physically secure encourages children to explore movement, develop coordination and build confidence over time.
Respondents also highlighted the importance of ‘creating a non-judgemental atmosphere’ (13.3%).
Children thrive when they feel accepted and supported, regardless of ability. A positive environment encourages participation without fear of failure, helping pupils develop confidence while enjoying physical activity alongside their peers.
This reinforces that inclusion is not simply about adapting equipment and that it is more about creating a culture where every child feels they belong.
Another 13.3% of respondents selected ‘solutions that can be modified over time as pupils improve.’
Children develop at different rates, particularly within SEND settings. Activities that can gradually increase in difficulty or complexity allow pupils to experience success while continuing to challenge themselves appropriately.
Adaptable environments help teachers differentiate activities without excluding children or requiring completely separate lesson plans.
Although only 6.7% selected ‘variety’, respondents still recognised its value.
Introducing different activities, movement patterns and equipment helps maintain interest, prevents boredom and supports the development of a broader range of physical skills.
Variety also allows teachers to discover which activities individual children respond to most positively.
The comments provided alongside the survey gave valuable insight into what practitioners really need.
Many respondents explained that SEND is a ‘broad term’ with pupils presenting a wide range of physical, cognitive and sensory needs. Successful environments should therefore never take a "one size fits all" approach.
Professionals highlighted the importance of:
These comments reinforce that flexibility and thoughtful planning are fundamental to creating successful physical activity environments.
The survey demonstrates that successful physical activity environments are designed around the people using them.
Professionals value environments that are simple to deliver, safe to use, adaptable as children progress and welcoming for every participant.
When schools invest in inclusive planning alongside quality outdoor facilities, they create opportunities for every child to experience the physical, social and emotional benefits of regular exercise.
By prioritising simplicity, safety and inclusion, schools can build outdoor environments where every child feels confident to take part and succeed.
