outdoor gym in Summer

Even more time to enjoy outdoor gyms once the clocks change!

To help people to make the most of the longer daylight hours, here in the UK we change clocks twice a year – putting them forward by an hour in the spring and back by an hour in the autumn (spring forward, fall back is the easy way to remember which way round it is!).

25th March 2024

In the spring, the clock change is always on the last Sunday in March, which, in 2024, is March 31 and happens to be Easter Sunday.  The clocks will jump forward an hour at 1am. This day also marks the start of British Summer Time. While, inevitably, we lose an hour in bed, on the upside it does mean we can look forward to lighter early mornings and evenings.

Daylight saving time has been a feature of British life since 1916, when we brought in the measure here in wartime just weeks after Germany did. But – fun fact! – Coldplay’s Chris Martin, great-great-grandfather William Willett had fought for its introduction years earlier in 1907.

Use the extra hour!

Daylight saving time, while not, it’s fair to say, universally popular, brings with it a number of benefits, including fewer traffic accidents and saved energy. It also provides more time for outdoor activities first thing and after work in the evenings. Equally, there are many reasons to embrace the hour change and the extra natural light, from enhanced mood, sleep and Vitamin D to improved cognitive function and productivity.

More time to enjoy the outdoors

The lighter evenings and mornings make it more possible to work out al fresco. At the same time, if you’re managing allergies like hay fever, once we move into high summer, if you’re able to exercise before 7am and after around 5 or 6pm, you avoid the times of day when the pollen count is likely to be at its peak.
