The outdoor gym equipment at Merriott, Somerset has been a resounding success, with villagers of all ages and abilities using the equipment and experiencing the significant health benefits of regular exercise. In fact, people from neighbouring villages have been travelling specifically to Merriott to use the outdoor gym. What are the key things that has made this outdoor gym so successful?
When it came to choosing pieces for the outdoor gym, the Parish Council worked closely with Fresh Air Fitness on the selection of pieces. The end result gave real variety to the community including cardio, flexibility and strength pieces. This also offers something for all ages and abilities, from the hip twister and bike, which are great pieces for beginners, to the dip station and triple pull up, which are great for the more advanced users looking to work on strength.
The outdoor gym equipmentwas supported with a series of open sessions taking place on four consecutive Sunday mornings which were promoted in the village magazine. There have also been regular newsletter articles detailing different aspects of the outdoor gym equipment. Furthermore, a year after opening there was a further open day which continued to increase the awareness of the outdoor gym equipment facility.
There have been several incentives offered for taking part in the structured outdoor gym sessions – from a free bun for breakfast to a free ice cream – these have been used as a small incentive to encourage the local population to give the outdoor gym equipment a try! Furthermore, the village has used a personal trainer to run some of the trial sessions in order to support and maximise the use of the equipment.
