A recent survey by Decathlon asked couples how they found exercising together and 43 percent admitted that working out with their partner has definitely helped their relationship. Couples went on to say that it helped them spend quality time together, feel closer to one another and feel more attracted to each other, because of their shared activity.

One in five couples questioned, said that the best thing about working out with their partner was the fact that it helped decrease stress levels, which cut their chances of arguing.

Next time you fancy some exercise, here are even more great reasons to ask your beau to join you!

Motivation and Accountability

Just like having any gym buddy, choosing the one you love as a workout partner is an excellent way to create a regular exercise routine with less excuses to skip a planned day. This is particularly helpful if you live with your partner, because neither one of you can create a fake meeting or a fake feeling to get out of a session!

More than half of the challenge of working out is just getting up off the sofa and out of the door, so having someone right there with you gives you less opportunity to hold yourself back.

Tension Buster

With busy schedules, young children and juggling all of our daily responsibilities, tension, stress and anxiety can creep in – which is totally natural. To keep things positive in any relationship, use fitness to release any build-up of tension.

Exercising together works on your health and your happiness and it can be great fun too. Challenge yourselves, have a giggle and sweat out any of those niggles and grumbles!

Bonding

Exercise builds bonds. In fact, it was found in a study by the Social Sciences Department at Oxford University that ‘social motion’ definitively builds stronger bonds. Bonding is the key to developing a close and lasting relationship. Switch the restaurant for the gym and find an even healthier way to spend some quality time together through a shared experience.

Up The Burn

A little sporting challenge with one another sometimes is good fun and studies have shown that exercising with a buddy can increase calories burned by up to 25%.

In fact, if you add a little friendly competition into your workout, you’re far less likely to call time early, or put in a below standard session.

The motivation that comes from having a fitness partner pushes us to go that bit further, with the average workout with friends or partners lasting for 44 minutes, compared to a solo session at 38 minutes.

But we don’t like to train in the same way!

Fitness is such an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, that it makes sense to involve your favourite person in that, but it’s not unusual to expect your other half to prefer a different type of workout to you.

So, the best outcome is to go out training together but focus on your own thing. Take outdoor gym equipment for example, there is a whole range of equipment to suit cardio, strength, calisthenics, or a mix of everything.

Whatever you are in the mood for there is something for both of you!
